Hey, I'm Jordan
Eagle Scout, avid outdoorsman, truck bed camper, and the person behind every review, comparison, and recommendation on this site.
Why I Built OffGrid Benchmark
I live on a hill in Washington State. Every fall and winter, the windstorms roll through and knock out our power — sometimes for hours, sometimes for days. After the third outage in one winter left us scrambling with flashlights and a cooler full of thawing food, I decided to actually solve the problem.
So I started researching portable power stations. And I quickly realized that the review landscape was a mess — sponsored content, spec-sheet regurgitation, and affiliate sites that had clearly never touched the products they were recommending. I spent weeks digging through Reddit threads, YouTube teardowns, and manufacturer spec sheets just to figure out which power station could actually run our fridge through a 12-hour outage.
That research became a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet became a scoring framework. And the scoring framework became OffGrid Benchmark.
I built this site to be the resource I wished existed when I was standing in my dark kitchen at 2 AM wondering if the EcoFlow DELTA 3 was actually worth three grand.
My Background
I've been an outdoorsman my whole life. Eagle Scout, grew up camping and backpacking in the Pacific Northwest, and I've spent more nights in a tent than I can count. These days I run a truck bed camper setup — which means every ounce of gear has to earn its space, and every watt-hour matters.
My background in web development is what let me build the programmatic comparison engine that powers this site — where adding a single product YAML file automatically generates review pages, head-to-head comparisons, and best-for recommendations.
Between the power outages at home (living on a hill in the Pacific Northwest means trees + wind = no power, multiple times per year), the truck bed camping trips, and the constant gear research, I've developed a genuine obsession with off-grid equipment that I've channeled into this site.

How I Test
Every product on this site goes through the same structured evaluation. I don't read spec sheets and rewrite marketing copy. Here's the process:
Specs-Based Scoring
Every product is scored on a 0-10 scale using the same weighted formula. Capacity, output, weight, cycle life — measurable, comparable, verifiable numbers.
Real-World Testing
When I own the product, I test it in real conditions — running my fridge during an outage, charging from solar on a camping trip, filtering creek water on the trail.
Community Data
I aggregate feedback from Amazon reviews, Reddit communities, YouTube teardowns, and brand forums to catch reliability patterns invisible from specs alone.
Regular Updates
Prices change, new models launch, and firmware updates shift performance. I re-evaluate and update content regularly so you're never reading stale data.
For the full breakdown of scoring weights, data sources, and evaluation criteria, see the detailed methodology page.
Editorial Independence
I'll be upfront: OffGrid Benchmark earns money through affiliate commissions. When you click certain links and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how I fund testing and keep the site running.
That said, affiliate partnerships never influence ratings, rankings, or recommendations. The scoring formula is applied identically to every product regardless of affiliate relationship. I frequently recommend products from brands I have no partnership with, and I publish critical reviews of products from affiliate partners when the data warrants it.
Read the full affiliate disclosure for details on how this works.
