How we test →The EcoFlow RIVER 3 is the best grab-and-go power station under $250, but its 245Wh capacity means you need to know exactly what it can and cannot do.
✓ What We Liked
- Ultra-lightweight at just 7.8 lbs — true grab-and-go portability
- LiFePO4 battery with 3,000 cycle lifespan
- Full AC charge in 60 minutes
- IP54 rated for dust and splash resistance
- Under $240 MSRP — excellent entry-level price
✗ What We Didn't
- 245Wh capacity limits runtime for larger devices
- 300W output (600W X-Boost) won't handle high-draw appliances
- 110W max solar input means slow solar charging
- Only 2 AC outlets
At 7.8 pounds and 245Wh, the EcoFlow RIVER 3 is not trying to be your off-grid power system. It is trying to be the thing you toss in a bag without thinking about it. And at that job, it is genuinely excellent.
What It Does Well
The RIVER 3 nails the fundamentals of ultra-portable power. It charges phones, laptops, cameras, drones, and small LED lights without complaint. The 300W continuous output with X-Boost to 600W means it can technically run a small fan or a mini blender, though you will drain the battery fast doing it. The real magic is the form factor: 10 x 8.3 x 4.4 inches fits in a daypack, a camera bag, or a car door pocket. You forget it is there until you need it.
Charging speed is a standout. A full AC recharge takes about 60 minutes, which is remarkable for any capacity class. If you are running between meetings or packing for an overnight trip, you can top it off during lunch. LiFePO4 chemistry gives you 3,000 cycles, so this thing will outlast several phones. The IP54 rating adds peace of mind for dusty trails and light rain, something the Jackery Explorer 300 cannot claim.
EcoFlow’s app integration is polished. You get real-time wattage monitoring, charge limit settings, and firmware updates over Bluetooth. It is overkill for a station this small, but it is nice to have.
Where It Falls Short
The 245Wh capacity is the obvious limitation. Running a 12V compressor fridge will drain the RIVER 3 in roughly three hours. A CPAP machine on a low setting might get you one night, but barely. If your use case involves anything beyond phones, laptops, and small electronics, you need more capacity. The 110W max solar input also means off-grid recharging is slow — a 100W panel will take about three hours in ideal sun.
Compared to the Jackery Explorer 300, the RIVER 3 wins on battery chemistry and build quality. The Jackery’s Li-NMC cells only last about 500 cycles, meaning the RIVER 3 will still be running strong long after the Jackery has degraded. But the Jackery is slightly lighter at 7.1 pounds and occasionally cheaper on sale.
Who Should Buy It
Buy the RIVER 3 if you want a reliable, long-lasting power station for day trips, overnight camping, travel, or emergency phone charging. It is the best ultralight option under $250 for people who prioritize portability over raw capacity.
Skip it if you need to run a fridge, power tools, a CPAP for multiple nights, or anything that draws more than 300W continuously. You will be frustrated by the runtime. Look at the BLUETTI AC70 or the Anker SOLIX C800 Plus instead — they weigh more, but they actually power real loads.
The RIVER 3 is a phone-and-laptop charger that happens to have AC outlets. Accept it on those terms, and it is one of the best in its class.
