How Long Will a Space Heater Run on a 1500Wh Power Station?

A 1,500W space heater on high will run about 50 minutes on a 1,500Wh power station. On the low (750W) setting you get roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. Critical caveat: many 1,500Wh-class units cannot continuously output 1,500W — check the continuous AC output rating before relying on it for high-heat use.

The Math, Worked Out

Formula: (Battery Wh × 0.85) ÷ Device watts = Runtime hours

Battery: 1500 Wh

Usable after 15% inverter loss: 1275 Wh

Heater on high: 1500 W

(1500 × 0.85) ÷ 1500 = 0.85 hours = ~51 minutes on high.

On low (750W): (1500 × 0.85) ÷ 750 = ~1 hour 42 minutes.

With a 60W heated blanket instead: (1500 × 0.85) ÷ 60 = ~21 hours. That's the right tool for battery-powered warmth.

Variables That Affect the Answer

  • Continuous output limit. The biggest gotcha. A "1500Wh" station with only 1,000W continuous AC output will trip the moment the heater turns on. You need 1,500W+ continuous, ideally with 2,000W+ surge.
  • Thermostat cycling. Once the room is warm, a thermostatic heater cycles on/off and average draw drops. Real-world runtime can be 2× the continuous-draw number in a small, insulated space.
  • Heater type. Ceramic, oil-filled, and infrared all draw similar power — they're all just resistive heating elements. The "efficient" claims are mostly marketing.
  • Ambient temperature. Below 20°F the heater runs nearly constantly. Above 50°F it cycles often. Insulation and room size matter more than heater brand.
  • Battery temperature. Lithium batteries lose 20–30% effective capacity below freezing. A 1,500Wh battery used in a 20°F shed delivers more like 1,100Wh.

Can my power station even run a 1500W space heater?
Only if its continuous AC output is rated 1,500W or higher. Many 1,500Wh-class units only output 1,000–1,200W continuous, which will trip overload when the heater turns on. Check the continuous AC output spec, not the surge spec.
How can I make a space heater run longer on battery?
Run it on the low (750W) setting — doubles runtime to ~1h 40m. Better: use a heated blanket (60W) or 12V seat heater instead — they deliver the warmth where you need it at 5–10% of the power.
Is a space heater ever practical to run off a power station?
For short bursts (taking the chill off a small room, defrosting pipes) — yes. For overnight heating — no. The math is brutal: a heater needs 1.5 kWh per hour. Plan for an alternative heat source if you need sustained warmth off-grid.
What about an oil-filled radiator instead?
Same problem. Oil-filled radiators still draw 1,200–1,500W when heating; they just retain warmth longer between cycles. Runtime is similar to a ceramic heater. A 1,500Wh battery gives you about 1 hour total.
